Who Can Get a Michigan Driver’s License?
You must meet two main requirements to get a Michigan driver’s license. First, you must be legally present in the US. This means you have valid immigration status, such as a visa, lawful permanent residency, or employment authorization. If you are not legally present, you can’t get a Michigan license.
Second, you must be a Michigan resident. Residency means you live in Michigan and can prove it with documents. You need at least two documents with your name and Michigan address. These could include a lease agreement, mortgage statement, utility bill, bank statement, or pay stub. If you meet both requirements, you can apply for a Michigan driver’s license at the Secretary of State’s office.
Types of Immigration Statuses That Qualify for a Michigan License
Michigan requires proof of legal presence to issue a driver’s license. Lawful permanent residents (LPRs), commonly known as Green Card holders, can apply for licenses. You do not need a Michigan driver’s license if you have a valid license from another US state or territory. You can legally drive in Michigan as long as your out-of-state license is current.

If your country has a treaty agreement with the United States, you can drive in Michigan without proving your legal presence. If your country does not have a treaty, you must prove legal presence with a valid passport, visa, or other immigration documents. Your license must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation or International Driving Permit.
